Improve Your Posture in Chapin SC

Chiropractic Chapin SC Improve Your Posture

Humans have become sitters. We sit in the car, at work in front of our computer, and at home in front of the TV or mobile device. By drastically decreasing the amount of time we spend moving around each day, we have increased the severity of poor posture and, consequently, increased the negative effects it can have on our health. According to the Washington Post, the average American adult sits 6.5 hours a day, and the average teenager sits 8 hours a day! Contact our Chapin SC chiropractor today to learn how to avoid poor posture.

We've also drastically increased the amount of time we look down. It's no secret, our mobile devices have gone from simple communication tools to front and center, all-day every day attention grabbers demanding us to "look down at them" more and more. Several recent studies have shown that the average person spends over 4 hours a day on their mobile device. That's about a quarter of our waking hours spent looking down just at our mobile devices! Bad posture from looking down at our devices has become such a problem, it has been given its own name... "Tech Neck".

What Is Posture In Chapin SC?

Posture is the position we hold our bodies in space, whether standing, sitting, or lying down. Poor posture can increase pressure on your spine and contribute to soreness, tension, fatigue, back pain and headaches.

It definitely takes discipline to correct our posture and maintain it, but the benefits are worth it. Here are 6 tips to try each day to help correct your posture:

  1. Be conscious of the way you sit. Make sure to avoid slouching or hunching by keeping your shoulders back and your head up. Also make sure to sit back in you chair and support the proper curvature of your lower back. (If your chair is not comfortable and/or supportive, many companies have programs to get you a new chair that will be more ergonomic.)
  2. Make sure your desk and computer are set up in a way that your arms rest 90 degrees at the elbow and your screen sits at eye level. (You can also consider using a stand-up desk to reduce the amount of time you are sitting during the day)
  3. While on your mobile device, try to hold your device up as close to eye level as possible so as to reduce the amount of time you are looking down
  4. When sitting for long periods of time, take breaks that include walking and stretching.
  5. Use reminders. If you have a smartphone or tablet, use reminder notifications to help you remember to sit properly, walk or stretch periodically, and even stay hydrated
  6. When lifting and carrying heavy objects, practice proper techniques which include: keeping the item as close to your body as possible, bending and lifting at the knees instead of the waist to reduce strain on your back; and if it's too heavy to lift with proper technique on your own, ask someone to help.

With a little bit of effort each day, you can improve your posture!
